U.S. Hispanic Business Council Statement Opposing American Innovation and Choice Online Act

Washington, DC - United States Hispanic Business Council President and CEO Javier Palomarez released the following statement on the American Innovation and Choice Online Act, introduced by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA). The bill was recently voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“Put simply, the American Innovation and Choice Online Act is a poorly drafted bill that would hurt American small businesses, and particularly Hispanic entrepreneurs, while putting jobs at serious risk. Thousands of Hispanic small and medium-sized businesses compete and succeed using the platforms and marketplaces that are provided by companies this legislation unfairly targets. This legislation could prohibit companies like Google, Amazon and Apple from offering digital tools and services that benefit entrepreneurs. Lawmakers may think they are taking a jab at large companies but in fact they are striking at the heart of America’s vibrant and diverse small business community.

“If lawmakers are truly concerned about certain business practices, a ban should apply to all companies across the board - not a select few while allowing others to continue such practices. Regulatory action for the sake of scoring political points is short sighted and fails to assess the unintended consequences. The last thing American families and small business owners need is a bill that would prohibit or raise prices on services they use to grow their business, particularly at a time of record inflation.”
